Ganesh Chaturthi: The 10-Day Homecoming of Lord Ganesha
Why the festival stretches across ten days, what each stage means β and the silver pooja essentials that belong in every Ganpati Bappa welcome.
On 14 September 2026, homes and pandals across India will welcome Ganpati Bappa with conch shells, dhol beats and a plate of modaks. Eleven days later, on 25 September, the same idol will be carried out with the cry of "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya" β come again soon. In between lies one of Hinduism's most emotionally rich festivals: ten days where a household treats an idol as an honoured, living guest.
Why Do We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. He is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and Buddhi Pradayak, the giver of wisdom β which is why the festival is considered so auspicious for starting anything new: a business, a school year, a marriage, or simply a fresh chapter at home.
Unlike festivals that last a single day, Ganesh Chaturthi is built around the idea of inviting the deity to actually reside in the home. The idol is installed (Sthapana), worshipped daily with aarti, flowers and naivedya, treated as a guest for as long as the family chooses to keep him β a day and a half, three days, five, seven, or the full ten β and then respectfully sent off through Visarjan, the immersion that closes the celebration on Anant Chaturdashi.
The 10-Day Flow, Explained
Not every household keeps Ganesha for all ten days, but the traditional cycle runs from Sthapana to Anant Chaturdashi. Here's how the ten days generally unfold in 2026:
| Day | Date (2026) | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 14 Sep, Mon | Ganesh Sthapana β the idol is installed with Pran Pratishtha rituals during the Madhyahna muhurat, inviting Lord Ganesha into the home. |
| Day 1.5 | 15 Sep, Tue | Sawa Din Visarjan β for families observing the shortest, most traditional cycle. |
| Day 3 | 16 Sep, Wed | Teesra Din Visarjan for three-day observances; daily aarti and modak offerings continue elsewhere. |
| Days 2β5 | 15β18 Sep | Daily morning and evening aarti, offerings of durva grass, modak and jaggery, and community visits to see the idol. |
| Day 5 | 18 Sep, Fri | Panchami Visarjan for five-day households. |
| Days 6β7 | 19β20 Sep | Larger pandals hold cultural programs; devotion peaks with processions and bhajans. |
| Day 7 | 20 Sep, Sun | Saptami Visarjan for seven-day observances. |
| Days 8β9 | 21β24 Sep | Continued daily worship for households keeping the idol the full duration; preparations begin for the final farewell. |
| Day 10 | 25 Sep, Fri | Anant Chaturdashi β the grand Ganesh Visarjan, with final aarti, uttarpuja and immersion, marking the close of Ganeshotsav. |
A note on the idol: Increasingly, families are choosing eco-friendly clay murtis for immersion, while keeping a small, permanent silver Ganesha at home for daily worship year-round β a practice that honours both tradition and the rivers Ganesha blesses.
Why Silver Has a Place in Ganesh Chaturthi
Long before it became jewellery, silver was a temple metal. In Indian tradition, chandi (silver) is considered cooling, pure and auspicious β associated with the moon, with Goddess Lakshmi, and with warding off negative energy. That's why silver idols, silver diyas and silver pooja items are so commonly seen on the mandir shelf, not just during Ganesh Chaturthi but through Navratri and Diwali as well.
A silver Ganesha doesn't need to be immersed each year β it stays with the family, is passed down, and can be brought out for daily aarti long after the ten days of Ganeshotsav are over. That permanence is exactly why more households are adding a piece of silver pooja dΓ©cor to their Ganpati celebration this year.
