Festive Guide · Diwali 2026
Dhanteras is the day Indian homes buy something new, light a lamp, and ask for a year of barkat. If you're picking up silver this year, here's what to buy, how to do the puja, and which pooja pieces are worth a place in your mandir.
Puja is done in the evening during Pradosh Kaal, after sunset. Exact timings shift by city, so check your local panchang before you sit down.
What is Dhanteras, really?
"Dhan" means wealth. "Teras" is the 13th day of the lunar fortnight. Together they mark the first day of the five-day Diwali festival.
Three deities are worshipped today. Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, Lord Kuber for the safekeeping of wealth, and Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician, for health. Dhanteras is also remembered for the story of Hima, who piled coins and lit lamps at her door all night so that Yama could not enter. That's why lamps and metal go hand in hand on this day.
Why silver on Dhanteras
The old rule is simple: bring home something new and metal. Gold gets the headlines, but silver is the one most families actually buy, because it works at every budget and it's used in the puja itself.
Silver is traditionally seen as a pure and cooling metal, which is why it has always been chosen for diyas, idols, and puja thalis. Pure 925 silver also doesn't need replacing. A piece bought this Dhanteras can sit in your mandir for decades and move to the next generation.
